Discernment Counseling

Sometimes we are not sure if we want to be in a relationship or marriage any longer.

Too much damage has occurred, too much love lost. We've grown apart.

And despite efforts to connect, it feels like it's all become too hard.

This painful condition often results in couples thinking for the first time what life would be like if they a parted ways. Discernment Counseling is a type of couples counseling designed to target couples on the brink of a break-up, with the goal of increasing rapport and gaining clarity into a deeper understanding of one another's desires and perspectives. It might be described as an 11th hour, sober assessment of where the relationship is, which direction they want it to go, and how to get there.

In the therapy room couples can present in many ways. One partner might still harbor hope while the other is leaning out, creating conflict. In another scenario, both partners are in relative agreement about the desire to part ways but need help in getting there amicably. Or, both partners may very much want things to work out but can't resolve their differences.

In Discernment Counseling Three Paths are Considered

Remain in the relationship as it is

For some, trade-offs may be more acceptable than wholesale break-up, separation, or divorce. And while no one should stay in an unhappy relationship, some couples come to agree that a level of contentment can be achievable when the pressure of expectation has been eliminated and friendship bonds are energized accompanied by "new rules."

Break-up, separation, or divorce

Embedded in this option, sometimes referred to as "friendly divorce," is the goal of working away from antagonism, often assumed to be a condition of parting.

Work on building rapport to settle differences in hopes of commitment

If this path is chosen, with renewed enthusiasm and desire to make it work, the couple proceeds with a genuinely serious and flexible commitment to couples counseling.

Discernment Counseling is a short-term, intensive process lasting 3 - 5 sessions.
